ChatGPT: Kryptonite or Superpower of Career Practitioners?

    By Mr. Han Kok Kwang
    Thu June 8/Friday June 9, 2023

Chat GPT has taken the world by surprise.  Some career practitioners are asking what it is and how it works.  Those of us who use it are wondering how it can make us more effective in our work as career practitioners and how we can avoid wasting our time playing with it.  Join this webinar to accelerate your learning.  In the wise words of Bill Gates, "AI can magnify the best and worst of humanity. That’s why we need to be thoughtful about how we use it." While Chat GPT's abilities seem impressive, the risks of misuse and misinformation are also large, so it's vital to be aware of the tool's limitations and weaknesses. This is where you make the difference. Use Chat GPT to supplement (not replace) your effectiveness at work and you’ll be streets ahead.

Career Trends in the New Normal

    By Dephy Oon
    Recorded on July 14, 2020

    • What ‘new’ is around the corner, and what could the workplace be like in the future?
    • Which changes will be permanent, and what will not?
    • What will it take to ‘be noticed’? Or to ‘have more impact’? Or to lead?
    • What kind of jobs and careers will be most or least affected by these changes?
    • What can be done to be better prepared?

In this interactive session we will explore what the “new normal” means for career practitioners and their clients and what it would look like to have more readiness for a future which will be increasingly volatile, uncertain, complex and changing. As industries evolve, we will explore what that could mean for career planning and developing personal strategies to create resilient careers.

We will discuss ways to develop deep trust and empathy with a client while giving room for new possibilities and going beyond the norm, and what it will take to support a client through this co-creative process. We will learn what it means to be wholly present (thinking, feeling and doing) while serving and leading others during challenging times, where discomfort may be numbing, and we must go beyond charted territory. Together we will evaluate what it means and what is needed to thrive during challenging times. We explore ways in which you can re-design the new normal into the life you want and take positive actions forward.

Fees: Free to all members, Non-members: High-income country professional $10, Student $5; Not high-income professional $5, Student $2.50.

Sustaining Career Development: Using the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

    Dr. Candy Ho

    Recorded June 1, 2022

Inspired by the United Nations (UN) 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, a university career transition course introduced the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in its curriculum. A natural fit between career education and the UN SDGs was discovered as students pondered three big questions:

    • What is the world that I want to live in?
    • What do I see are the global problems or opportunities that need our attention?
    • What are my talents and experiences that may help address these problems and, in turn, improve the condition of our world?

Similarly, these questions can be – and ought to be – considered when developing programs and honing practices. Incorporating the SDGs, our work can inspire clients to assess their professional aspirations and how these aspirations can be grounded on a broader goal(s) that promotes a sustainable future for our local and global communities. This, in turn, further amplifies the impact of our work by ultimately helping clients realize their mission and purpose.

Dr. Candy Ho, EdD CDP, is an educator and scholar specializing in teaching university transition courses; the latter explains why she weaves career development theories into all aspects of her life. In addition to educating the next generation of CDPs in Douglas College, she holds a dual appointment as the inaugural Assistant Professor, Integrative Career and Capstone Learning at the University of the Fraser Valley and as Faculty, Educational Studies at Kwantlen Polytechnic University. Prior to becoming a faculty member, Candy has also worked extensively in university student affairs in first-year experience and student transition, campus and residence life, career and volunteer services, co-operative education, and academic advising. Finally, Candy currently serves as Vice-Chair of CERIC. This Canadian charitable organization advances education and research in career counseling and career development to increase Canadians' economic and social well-being.

    How Has Your Work Changed?

    Recorded on August 25, 2022

During the pandemic, many of us experienced changes in how we work.  Some of those changes were reversed in places where people are no longer worried about COVID.  Technology made a big jump forward, causing us to work differently and learn new skills.  For example, technology may now be used to do parts of your work that you formerly did by hand, or you may spend more time Zooming and less time driving to meetings.  As career practitioners, the changes for our clients impact us also. Job seekers must be prepared for AI Interviews and robotic resume screening, for example.  Are jobs easy or hard to find in your area?  Which skills are the most in demand?  Are workers looking forward to “getting back to normal” or nervous about the changes? Has your area experienced the “Great Resignation”?  Have you noticed changes in the types of things your clients care most about?

Because APCDA includes 22 member countries, hearing from our members and friends about the impact of these changes in their own country can give us some perspective on global changes.

Please note that the all who attended (and spoke) are included in this recording.
